QuinteQ featured as a ‘Gamechanger’ for Port of Rotterdam in new port experience center ‘Portlantis’.

We’re proud to announce that QuinteQ has been named ‘Gamechanger’ at Portlantis for our work the electrification of the Port of Rotterdam, thanks to our innovation with the flywheel and our support in this transition to more sustainable energy.

Portlantis is a new experience center, a result of a collaboration between the Port of Rotterdam and EIC Mainport Rotterdam, showcasing how the historic port is transitioning its operations to use sustainable energy. Located by the sea at Maasvlakte II, visitors can come to the center to see exhibitions and become informed on the complex but essential inner workings of this electrification process, in addition to both the port’s history and future.

QuinteQ became involved in 2022, when we realised the peakshaving potential our flywheels had in relation to port cranes. During the PortXL program, we were partnered with the Port of Rotterdam, because they saw potential for our flywheel in ports. We had a technological fit, but the timing was premature during the program due to the long horizon of EU legislation on port electrification. Now with the advancement of this EU legislation, the importance is growing and we are noticing more traction in this market.

QuinteQ’s collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam has since proven that our flywheel energy storage device is key in the electrification process in ports. Our flywheel is designed specifically with port cranes in mind, with their demands for high-frequency bursts of power making them the largest peak users on most terminals. With a collaboration between QuinteQ, the Port of Rotterdam, and Rhenus Logistics, we demonstrated our flywheel system’s ability to peakshave port cranes by up to 65% of their power demand. For this innovative technology, QuinteQ has been named a ‘Gamechanger’ at the opening ceremony for Portlantis, and we are greatly honored to be recognized.

If you find yourself visiting Portlantis, pass by the QuinteQ section, where an augmented reality tablet lets you see how our flywheel energy storage device contributes to more efficient, electrified port crane operations, and check out our LinkedIn for more updates.

About QuinteQ

At QuinteQ, we have the vision that everyone should have access to clean, affordable & reliable energy. We have taken on the challenge to develop and introduce a high-tech flywheel energy storage technology with the goal to provide an affordable and flexible energy storage solution to support the energy transition. It is our mission to design and build our products with the lowest possible footprint during production, operation, and re-use of the materials once a system is retired.
